RTC-Tools—the open-source optimisation platform created by two of our founders back in 2015—has officially joined LF Energy as a Technical Project. LF Energy is an open source foundation within the Linux Foundation that supports the energy sector's transition to renewables through open-source software development and adoption.

This adoption marks LF Energy's expansion beyond traditional grid operations into trading technology, reflecting the growing convergence of grid management and market optimisation. We're excited to contribute to the open-source energy ecosystem and look forward to collaborating with the LF Energy community to advance BESS optimisation and energy trading solutions.

We presented our work on battery energy storage optimisation at the LF Energy Summit Europe 2025 in Aachen, Germany.

The first talk explains how we help drive efficiencies in power trading through advanced BESS optimisation techniques, while simultaneously promoting code reuse through open-source and open-core solutions. We have released an open-source BESS optimisation demonstration for the Australian National Electricity Market, built on the open-source optimisation platform RTC-Tools. This basic demo achieves ±240 kAUD/MW/year in 2024 backtesting—matching best-in-class NSW battery performance—using only publicly available AEMO predispatch forecasts. The demo is freely available on GitHub and demonstrates the power of RTC-Tools as a foundation for BESS optimisation.

Our commercial open-core platform builds on RTC-Tools with advanced features including probabilistic optimisation, bid/offer volume & price co-optimisation, market impact modeling, FCAS co-optimisation, and comprehensive value stacking—delivering performance well beyond best-in-class with potential uplift of more than 40%.
